Repeat this week: show 41

This week's repeat is show 41, the Orlando special, an unusually high-brow endeavour for me. Enjoy the quotes from Antye Greie and Cathie Boyd, plus the, er, breathless readings from the book, hurriedly recorded before I returned it to the local library!

I just found out that the music by AGF and Craig Armstrong that accompanies the interview clips is due for release on her label in February 2011, so consider the show a preview.

2010 most played artists

The end of live broadcasts for 2010 has allowed me to do some calculations of what I played during the year, and I have had some unexpected results.

Taken as pure plays, my playlists indicate this:

2010 Most Played Artists on Odd Girl Out (individual)
Girl in a Thunderbolt
Meshell = The Shondes = Shunda K
Jen Gloeckner = Golden Diskó Ship = Greie Gut Fraktion = Amanda Palmer = Twin Sister

However, if I combine bands or collaborations the artist appears in, the list comes out like this:

2010 Most Played Artists on Odd Girl Out (combined)
Gudrun Gut
Bettina Köster
Girl in a Thunderbolt = Amanda Palmer
AGF = Kristin Hersh
Deb Googe = Kathleen Hanna = Meshell = The Shondes = Shunda K

Interesting. Who knew counting could be so much fun? Though it doesn't tell the full story, of course.

Repeat this week: show 39

While Optical takes a break from live shows, Odd Girl Out this week will repeat show 39. This was the show that recapped my 20 years in journalism and features readings from some of my articles related to the artists on the playlist.

Odd Girl Out show 50

So, the 2010 finale went out after a week-long delay, accompanied by another snowfall. How fitting. See you in 2011.

Alas, She Makes War was not able to join us in the chilly studio for a live session, but we did chat about her upcoming Megabus tour of the UK and whether the ukulele is the instrument of 2010. Meanwhile, outside winter crept in and London once again failed to cope with a few flakes of snow.

Coming up on Odd Girl Out 49

This week I am joined in the studio by the one-woman multimedia juggernaut that is She Makes War, about to take her bellicose melancholia on the road for a UK tour. She is bringing her ukulele and will be performing a couple of songs acoustically. Don't miss! Plus, an archive interview with everybody's favourite Jewish lesbian folksinger, Phranc.

Odd Girl Out: show 48

What was I saying about technical problems? This week the show was only viewable and audible on the webcam, and even then, the right channel was cranky. We hope to sort this out ASAP. But, I did my best to be visually interesting by offering some 1980s interpretative dance and a flexi disk show-and-tell. Do you get that on the Beeb? I think not.

Live tonight only on webcam!

Hi,
There is a problem with the station's server, and so the show is only able to be heard via the webcam: http://www.opticalradio.net/webcam.php.

Sunday's repeat should be OK.

Wednesday, 24 November 2010

Coming up on Odd Girl Out show 48

This week's show will feature an interview with up-and-coming rapper Lykez, recorded at Ladyfest Ten, plus an archive interview with Gina Schock and Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Gos, recorded backstage at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco in 1994.

Odd Girl Out: show 47

A few technical problems meant the first 12 minutes were not broadcast and the last 20 minutes didn't record, making this an elusive show for the listener. Nevertheless, it featured interviews with UnderWire film festival organiser Gabriella Apicella and La Moustache organiser Dana.

I'm currently wrapped up with Ladyfest Ten, but will post the playlist ASAP.

The show was devoted to Ladyfest, and every artist on it has played at least one Ladyfest. The interview segment was actually a specially convened roundtable that took place in NYC in 1993, bringing together the assembled knowledge of Riot Grrrl and lesbian feminism via Alix Dobkin, Kathleen Hanna, Jill Reiter and Selena Wahng.
